Are you a seeking a new opportunity? I would have thought so....

Health and Safety Advisor
£40,000 – £45,000
Exeter

An established civil engineering contractor is looking to appoint a Health and Safety Advisor to support the delivery of a major water infrastructure framework across the South West.

The programme involves a varied portfolio of clean and wastewater infrastructure, including reservoirs, pumping stations, pipelines and associated civil engineering works. Working alongside operational and project teams, you’ll help ensure these schemes are delivered safely and in accordance with legislative, client and company requirements.

This is a predominantly site-based position suited to someone who enjoys being close to the work, engaging directly with delivery teams and providing practical, solutions-focused health and safety support.

The Role

As Health and Safety Advisor, you’ll work across projects throughout the framework, building strong relationships with site teams, management and key stakeholders.
Rather than simply monitoring compliance, you’ll play an active role in improving standards, encouraging positive behaviours and helping teams identify safer and more effective ways of working.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Completing regular site inspections, audits and compliance monitoring.
  • Providing practical health and safety guidance to operational teams and managers.
  • Supporting the development and delivery of health and safety objectives across the framework.
  • Assisting with investigations into accidents, incidents and near misses, establishing root causes and recommending corrective actions.
  • Providing health and safety input during tendering, bidding and project planning.
  • Identifying improvements to systems, processes and working practices.
  • Developing and promoting safety initiatives and sharing best practice between projects.
  • Undertaking Attitude, Behaviour and Culture (ABC) tours to encourage positive safety behaviours.
  • Promoting proactive hazard and near-miss reporting across project teams.
  • Building productive relationships with colleagues, clients and other stakeholders to keep health and safety central to project delivery.

About You

You’ll already have solid experience working as a Health and Safety Advisor, ideally within water, utilities, civil engineering or the wider infrastructure sector.
You’ll be comfortable spending time on operational sites and working directly with delivery teams, offering practical advice while being confident enough to challenge unsafe practices constructively.

You’ll also bring:

  • A good working knowledge of current UK health and safety legislation.
  • Experience supporting construction, utilities or infrastructure projects.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to build credibility at different levels.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to develop positive relationships with operational teams.
  • The confidence to challenge behaviours while maintaining engagement with site personnel.
  • A proactive and organised approach to managing your own workload.
  • The ability to prioritise site inspections, investigations and improvement activities across multiple projects.
  • NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Tech IOSH membership, or progression towards Graduate IOSH.
  • A full UK driving licence due to the site-based nature of the position.

The Opportunity

Joining a well-established infrastructure business, you’ll be supporting a significant programme of investment in essential water infrastructure across the South West.

The Health and Safety Advisor will have exposure to a diverse range of projects and assets, providing plenty of variety while giving you the opportunity to influence safety performance across an active infrastructure framework.

The package includes:

  • £40,000 – £45,000 salary
  • Car / Allowance
  • Company pension.
  • Healthcare benefits.
  • 24-26 days annual leave.
  • Employee retail and lifestyle discount scheme.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Support towards your ongoing career and professional development.

If you have a background in health and safety within utilities, water, civil engineering or infrastructure and prefer a role where you can spend time on site making a practical difference, this could be a strong next move.
