Assistant Quantity Surveyor
Salary: £34,000 – £36,000

A respected UK Civil Engineering contractor is expanding its commercial team and is looking to recruit an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to support the delivery of projects across the South West Water AMP8 framework.
Working on a diverse portfolio that includes pipelines, reservoirs, pumping stations and earthworks, this opportunity is ideal for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor who has already begun their career and is looking to gain hands-on experience within a supportive, well-established business. You’ll also benefit from structured training and mentorship towards achieving chartered status.

The Role

As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you’ll work closely with the commercial team to help manage costs, maintain contractual compliance and support the successful financial delivery of multiple civil engineering projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce weekly and monthly cost value reconciliations.
  • Track, allocate and monitor project costs, commitments and liabilities.
  • Build strong working relationships with clients, internal teams and supply chain partners.
  • Identify commercial risks and opportunities, escalating issues where required.
  • Assist with preparing tenders, quotations and contract documentation.
  • Monitor project expenditure and investigate unexpected costs.
  • Manage and maintain insurance claim records.
  • Keep commercial records and contractual documentation accurate and up to date.
  • Support the preparation, award and administration of subcontract agreements.
  • Process direct labour payments.
  • Share best practice and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the business.

About You

You’ll have already taken your first steps into Quantity Surveying and be looking for the opportunity to develop your commercial knowledge within a leading Civil Engineering contractor.

Ideally, you’ll have:

  • Between 6 months and 2 years’ experience within a Quantity Surveying role.
  • A degree in Construction, Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management.
  • Experience working with subcontractors.
  • Good commercial awareness within the construction or civil engineering sector.
  • Knowledge of NEC3 contracts, particularly ECC NEC3 Option C.
  • An understanding of construction practices and contract law.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Excellent analytical, communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Previous experience in a client-facing environment.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Confidence to identify, raise and resolve commercial issues.
  • A proactive, resilient and solutions-focused approach.
