Assistant Quantity Surveyor
Salary: £34,000 – £36,000

Due to continued growth, they’re looking to appoint an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to strengthen their commercial team and play a key role in supporting the successful delivery of major infrastructure schemes on the South West Water AMP 8 framework.

This is a great opportunity for an ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor looking to build commercial experience, work alongside experienced professionals and develop within a business that invests in long-term careers. Structured training and mentorship to chartered status is available. 

The Role

As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you’ll provide commercial support across multiple projects (Earthworks, pipelines, reservoirs, pumping stations etc), helping to drive profitability while ensuring robust cost control and contractual compliance throughout each stage of delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare weekly and monthly cost value reconciliations.
  • Record, allocate and monitor project costs, commitments and liabilities.
  • Develop strong working relationships with colleagues, clients and supply chain partners.
  • Identify commercial risks and opportunities, raising any deviations from agreed procedures.
  • Assist with the preparation of tenders, quotations and contract documentation.
  • Monitor project expenditure, highlighting unexpected or inappropriate costs.
  • Record and manage insurance claims.
  • Maintain accurate commercial records and contractual documentation.
  • Process direct labour payments and support the preparation and award of subcontract agreements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by sharing knowledge and best practice across the business.

About You

You’ll have started your career as a quantity surveyor and have 6 months to 2 years experience under your belt. 

Ideally, you’ll have:

  • A degree in Construction, Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management.
  • Previous experience managing subcontractors.
  • Strong commercial awareness within the construction sector.
  • Knowledge of NEC3 contracts, particularly ECC NEC3 Option C.
  • A solid understanding of construction methods and contract law.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical, communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience working within a client-facing environment.
  • The ability to prioritise workloads and manage competing deadlines.
  • Confidence to identify, escalate and resolve commercial issues.
  • A resilient, accountable and solutions-focused mindset.
